iPoker 5 is Coming

Existing customers are invited to download and help test the next major release of The Ultimate Poker Simulation.

You can help shape iPoker's future by using the Send Feedback command on iPoker 5's Help menu to submit any bug reports—after reviewing the Known Issues listed on this page, of course.

When submitting feedback, please do not change the email's subject line. That helps us track issues more easily.

What's New?

  • The iPoker 5 application is now self-contained under a single icon. This makes it easier to install, move around and update.

  • New oval table layout for 9 players (plus the dealer) in a fixed-sized window.

  • 100% Quartz graphics:

    • Every photorealistic object on the table is rendered at a scale of 1mm = 1 pixel.

    • New chip graphics, overlapping cards and dynamic shadows.

    • New Dealer button, iPhones, iPod touches and more cup holders than an SUV.

    • Customizable table logo, table rail and flooring.

  • Multiple side pots are now visualized and handled properly. This was a long-standing issue in previous versions, especially during the showdown in high-low split-pot games with all-in players and multiple ties.

  • Full integration with your Address Book enables you to play against people you know or create your own opponents.

What's Old?

  • The tired old QuickTime player videos have been retired.

    • This also reduces iPoker 5's footprint by 40 MB.

  • The 101 game files included with iPoker can no longer be customized, nor can their internal Hand Strengths databases be reset.

    • These rarely-used features were more trouble than they were worth.

  • The ability to change the chip denominations has been disabled. The chip values are now fixed at 1, 5, 25, 100 and 500.

    • This could change in a future release.

  • The sampled Dealer's Speech option has been permanently removed in favor of the more robust synthesized voices.

    • Leopard's default "Alex" voice is quite good.

Known Issues

  • Animation for card and chip movement is not yet implemented due to performance limitations. This may be phased in after iPoker 5's initial release. Hopefully Apple will make Core Animation more accessible to Carbon developers.

  • Chips do not yet "travel" with your opponents between sessions. They stay bound to the seats. iPoker 5 will eventually store each player's chips in a custom field in the Address Book.

  • "Match-the-pot" games (such as Baseball) are currently broken. Any payment will be improperly refunded.

  • "Split-the-pot" games (such as High Chicago) are currently broken. The highest spade in the hole, for example, will not win half the pot as expected.

  • "Arrange-your-hand" games (such as Anaconda) are currently broken. You won't be able to drag your cards into a new order, so you'll have to accept iPoker 5's recommended arrangement for now.

  • The betting logic still generally needs a lot of work, especially for pot-limit and no-limit play. A whole new AI model will likely be phased in after iPoker 5's initial release, so please be patient and refrain from reporting AI issues for now.

  • Networking is still not supported and will not likely ever be. Networking is a coding, testing, licensing and customer-support nightmare. Plus, there are plenty of other poker games out there which allow you to play with real people for free, such as Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars. iPoker is a simulation. It does not enable actual gambling and it does not try to compete with live poker networks.

  • We do hope to eventually develop a native iPhone OS version of iPoker, but that is a major challenge right now because Apple chose to require Cocoa for iPhone development, to the exclusion of developers who have an investment in Carbon applications.

  • Other issues will be added here as they are discovered.
